Wychwood School | The New Hall

The New Hall

The new hall was opened on 16 September 2006. The building is magnificent, an impressive, simple structure that can be a badminton court, a gym, a theatre, a meeting room, an examination hall, an assembly room or a concert hall with lighting, projection facilities and a sound system. It can be dark, it can be light, and it even has loos! Magically, raked seating can be put out and taken in at a touch of a button. It should serve the school well for many years to come. The Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Hugo Brunner, Lady Bullock, Ann Spokes, Mrs Schuller and Miss Barker were among the gathering of guests that included parents, friends of Wychwood, some current pupils and staff, Old Girls and members of the Board of Governors.

We were welcomed by musical performances from some of the girls. Aerialist and Old Girl Matilda Leyser gave a very moving and imaginative performance using nothing but a rope and simple sounds of music, breath and voice to depict a woman's total life span from birth, through adolescence, pregnancy, giving birth, working and old age. It was most appropriate in content and that an Old Girl should be doing the opening ceremony. The hall was then officially opened with the unveiling of a glass engraving by local engraver Philip Lawson Johnston, showing Matilda on her rope. Matilda said how delighted she was to be immortalised in such a way. Head Girl Georgia Griffiths thanked Matilda and the Headmistress Mrs Wingfield Digby thanked all those who had been involved in the project. The Chairman of the Governors, Mrs Deborah Pluck, thanked the Headmistress for her magnificent achievement in managing the project and bringing it to completion.

We were treated to an excellent lunch and had time to see the new memorial garden for Miss Snodgrass that had been carefully created by David Hicks near the old beech tree at the end of the tennis court. There was an opportunity to view the artwork, fabrics and photography in the art room and an excellent exhibition of old Wychwood had been put on by Michèle Crawford showing very old uniforms, photographs and school magazines. Some adventurous Old Girls logged onto the website for the first time under the guidance of the administrator Jeanette Matelot.
