High Tea at the Randolph for the poetry winners!
On Thursday 6th March 2008 the winner, Jennifer Heath Brown, the runner-up Daniella Ashdown, and the two girls who were Highly Commended in the recent school poetry competition, Hollie James and Bethanie Saward were treated to High Tea at the Randolph Hotel, here in Oxford.
The girls were all from the LTs although the competition had involved entries from across the school. English teachers, Ms Crawford and Miss Sherlock, accompanied them and their eyes were as large as the saucers on the tables when the splendid spread arrived!
After the tea the girls went to Waterstones to choose winning books.

The Charlotte Kell award is a new school poetry award, bequeathed by Charlotte’s sister earlier this year. The prize is a wonderful experience and the excitement in the bookshop after the tea was tangible. Jennifer spent £50, Daniella £30 and Beth and Hollie £10 each.
Jennifer and Daniella chose a beautiful hardback copy of Du Maurier’s ‘Rebecca’ and Jennifer also purchased the Twilight trilogy by Stephanie Meyers. These books have a waiting list at the library so now Jennifer has her very own school waiting list, and her friends are most grateful!
Jennifer’s winning poem
Connecting
In the eerie half-darkness,
As the sun breaks for flight,
An artist has almost completed her work,
Found sometimes in corners,
Avoided by all,
But now in the borders the spinstress does lurk.
With the icy clear crystals,
Adorning its threads,
Woven and winding- all carefully placed,
Unseen by the creatures,
Whom it most affects,
With binding solutions its stitches are laced.
Whilst silently balanced,
Still waiting to strike,
She sits on her throne of the glinting white snare,
The intricate art,
Of the seamstress most skilled,
Awaits the first victim to enter her lair.
