English
At Wychwood, we believe that English is at the heart of the curriculum and Remove and Inters (Years 7 and 8) have a lesson every day, taught by the Head of Department. These lessons aim to give a secure foundation of literacy skills to every girl: reading, creative writing, grammar and spelling are covered in a structured course and there is time for individual oral presentations, group discussions, poetry workshops and many other aspects of learning in this richly varied subject.
Class, group and personal reading include a range of modern stories, biography, autobiography, poetry and plays. In the Inters (Year 8) we begin Shakespeare and in Lower Transits (Year 9) read “Jane Eyre” as well as more modern texts.
A member of Lower Transits has just won the 2007 BBC Wildlife Poetry Competition and will be reading her poem on Radio 4. We also celebrated the Queen’s Golden Jubilee by one of our Study (Sixth Form) winning the Gold Medal in the Poetry competition, which was presented at Buckingham Palace by the Queen herself.
