History of Art

History of Art is an enjoyable and rewarding subject. AS and A2 History of Art are essay based courses concerned with analysing painting, sculpture and architecture. The course assumes no previous knowledge and requires no practical artistic skills. The syllabus requires students not only to consider style but to learn how to construct and present an argument based upon critical analysis of an image, considering the methodology of its production, the historical context and using the appropriate terminology.
It is suitable for a wide range of students who wish to develop their interest in, and enjoyment of, the study of History of Art, fostering its value in lifelong learning. Art History works well in combination with many other subjects, in particular History, English, Languages and Art.
Work covered in the classroom is supplemented by frequent visits to galleries, exhibitions and architectural sites whether in Oxford, London or further afield on study trips to Rome and Paris. Outside speakers provide additional stimulus, and benefit students with the fresh viewpoints they offer. In addition students are required to read around the subject and visit exhibitions in their own time; this means that a true interest in History of Art is essential.
