MUSIC (Edexcel)
Music is offered at A and AS level. Normally AS level would be taken after one year and A level after two years.
What do I need before taking this course?
To play an instrument or sing at grade 5 standard
Grade B or above at GCSE Music
What does the course involve?
The AS Level course is divided into three units of study:
Performance
Composition
Listening and understanding.
It is assessed as follows:
Performance: Students will be required to perform and record one or more solo pieces lasting between 5 - 6 minutes, in total. They will also perform 4 other pieces during the course to include one solo, one ensemble, one composition and one other piece.
Composition: Students must compose one individual piece based on one of the areas of study and two other pieces in the style of other composers set by the exam board.
Listening and understanding: Students will take a 45 minute listening test based on a variety of musical styles. They will also have a 90 minute history exam in which they will have to answer questions on two areas of study.
The A2 Level course is divided into three units of study:
Performance and composition
Composing Portfolio or solo recital
Analysing music
It is assessed as follows:
Performance and composition: Students will submit 4 different pieces for assessment, including at least one solo and one ensemble piece. They will also have to answer questions on compositional technique.
Composition/Recital: Students will either write 2 compositions based on different topics or perform a solo recital of at least 20 minutes duration.
Analysing music: Students will sit a one hour listening test followed by a two hour written paper. The listening test will test aural perception; the written paper is a history exam on set words and continuity and context.
This is a course that will stretch candidates in all areas of music.
