Art
We follow the Fine Art syllabuses (AQA and Edexcel respectively) for GCSE and A level. This endorsement allows pupils to respond in a very wide variety of materials and styles to coursework projects set, and encourages the development of strong and individual personal styles –essential in a small school! All responses are seen as being worthwhile, researched, analysed and reviewed as the work progresses, and supported by a good basis of practical skills. Individuality and independence of thought are highly valued, and pupils grow in confidence as they learn to appreciate their own and others’ art. We teach in small or half classes, and the Art room and Study studios are enjoyable areas to work in, with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Work is initially sketchbook based, works by other artists are studied and exhibitions visited in Oxford and in London. The A level groups have the opportunity to attend Life classes locally, and girls have their own work areas that are theirs to use at anytime. Pupils taking Art at GCSE can also work in the Art room whenever they have free periods. Many pupils go on to Foundation and then Art Degree courses in a wide variety of disciplines, from illustration to costume design, and at present we have students at Bristol, Brighton, Camberwell, Chelsea and Oxford Brookes.
